Puppy to Pro: Off-Leash Reliability Case Study #12
Living in Arizona means endless opportunities to get outside — from morning hikes in South Mountain to patio lunches in Old Town Scottsdale. But when your dog doesn’t come when called or bolts at every distraction, those moments can turn stressful fast. At Rob’s Dogs, we help Valley families enjoy off-leash freedom safely through clear, proven training programs.
Meet “Kona,” a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever from Tempe. Her owners reached out after realizing that Kona’s energy and curiosity were getting the best of her. She loved people, dogs, and birds — just not her recall command.
The Challenge: Selective Listening & Zero Impulse Control
Kona’s owners described her as “sweet but stubborn.” She knew basic commands but only obeyed when she felt like it — especially off-leash. Her main challenges included:
-
Ignoring recall when distracted
-
Jumping on guests and furniture
-
Pulling on leash during walks
-
Bolting through open doors
-
Overexcitement around other dogs
Their dream was to take her on hikes and family outings without fear of her running off.
The Training Plan: Structured Board & Train
After a free in-person evaluation at our Tempe location, Kona enrolled in our 3-week Off-Leash Board & Train program. Our goal was to create consistent, calm obedience and a reliable recall that worked anywhere — not just at home.
Step 1: Foundational Obedience
We began by refining Kona’s core obedience: heel, sit, down, place, and recall. She learned that commands are not optional — they’re consistent expectations, always followed by praise and structure.
Step 2: Long-Line Conditioning
Once Kona mastered commands on-leash, we transitioned to a long-line setup. This step built her confidence and reinforced reliability with more freedom, teaching her to respond to commands from greater distances.
Step 3: Off-Leash Transition
Through gentle e-collar conditioning, Kona learned clear, consistent communication. This helped her understand that “come” means “come now,” even when squirrels, joggers, or other dogs were nearby. We proofed her obedience with real-world field trips across Tempe, Scottsdale, and Chandler parks.
Step 4: Owner Training
At graduation, Kona’s family joined us for hands-on coaching — learning proper leash handling, timing, and how to reinforce her off-leash obedience at home and beyond.
The Results: A Confident, Reliable Companion
By the end of her training, Kona could:
✅ Heel calmly through busy sidewalks in downtown Tempe
✅ Stay in a down position while her family ate on a patio
✅ Come immediately from over 100 feet away
✅ Remain relaxed around distractions and guests
Today, Kona enjoys off-leash hikes in the Superstition Mountains and relaxed daily walks without chaos. Her family told us, “We finally have the freedom to take her anywhere.”
