Puppy to Pro: Off-Leash Reliability Case Study #15
At Rob’s Dogs, we love helping families enjoy more freedom, confidence, and connection with their dogs. Our off-leash training programs are designed to create exactly that — dogs who listen anywhere, anytime, without the need for constant restraint.
In Case Study #15, we’re highlighting “Riley,” a 9-month-old Mini Australian Shepherd from Gilbert, who came to us with plenty of enthusiasm but little focus. Riley’s family wanted her to join them on hikes and park outings off-leash — but she was easily distracted and had a habit of running off to greet everyone she saw.
After completing our Off-Leash Reliability Board & Train Program, Riley went from distracted puppy to confident, responsive, and dependable off-leash companion.
The Challenge: Energetic, Social, and Overexcited
Riley’s owners described her as affectionate and smart — but also impulsive and stubborn. She loved people and dogs so much that she couldn’t resist running toward them, ignoring her recall command completely.
Her energy and friendliness were wonderful, but without structure, she was unpredictable and unsafe off-leash. Her family wanted the best of both worlds — freedom and control — so they reached out to Rob’s Dogs for help.
The Plan: 3-Week Off-Leash Reliability Program
After evaluating Riley at our Phoenix facility, we built a custom three-week Board & Train program focused on:
-
Strengthening obedience foundations (sit, down, place, come, heel)
-
Building impulse control and focus
-
Introducing low-level e-collar communication for reliable recall
-
Proofing behavior in real-world environments
-
Coaching her owners to maintain long-term success
Our goal was to give Riley the freedom she deserved — safely and reliably.
Week-by-Week Transformation
Week 1: Foundation and Focus
We began by teaching Riley clear structure and calm focus. Through leash guidance and positive reinforcement, she learned to pay attention and follow through with commands consistently.
Week 2: E-Collar Conditioning and Distraction Work
Once Riley understood her commands, we introduced the e-collar at a low, comfortable level to reinforce recall and heel. We then practiced around distractions — other dogs, noises, and movement — helping her stay focused.
Week 3: Real-World Off-Leash Practice
By week three, Riley was ready for real-world testing. We trained in parks, trails, and open spaces across Chandler and Gilbert. Her recall became instant, her heel stayed consistent, and her confidence soared.
By graduation, Riley could heel off-leash, recall instantly, and hold commands even around high distractions.
The Results: Freedom Through Structure
When Riley went home, her owners were thrilled. Walks were calm, hikes were enjoyable, and for the first time, they could trust her off-leash — even around other dogs and people.
They said, “She’s still our fun, happy girl — but now she actually listens!”
That’s the heart of our approach at Rob’s Dogs — giving dogs the structure they need to enjoy true freedom safely.
