What Should I Pack for Board & Train? Checklist for Owners
Preparing your dog for a Board & Train program can feel exciting — and maybe a little nerve-wracking. You want to make sure your dog has everything they need to be comfortable, safe, and ready to learn.
At Rob’s Dogs, we make the transition as smooth as possible. Whether your pup is joining us for puppy obedience, off-leash training, or behavior modification, here’s a complete packing guide to help you feel confident and prepared.
The Essentials: What to Bring for Board & Train
When your dog stays with us for training, we provide most of the equipment and structure they need. But there are a few personal items that help them feel at home and ensure their comfort. Here’s what to pack:
1. Food and Feeding Instructions
Bring enough food for your dog’s entire stay — plus a few extra days, just in case. Include:
-
Their regular kibble or diet (no sudden changes)
-
Any supplements or treats allowed
-
Clear feeding instructions (amounts, frequency, restrictions)
Consistency helps keep your dog’s stomach settled and their energy balanced during training.
2. Leash and Collar
Even though we use professional training equipment, it’s important to send your dog’s regular leash and flat collar for transport and comfort. If your dog is already using a prong or e-collar, bring it along — but we’ll evaluate whether those tools are appropriate during training.
3. Crate (If You Have One)
If your dog is already crate-trained, bringing their crate can help them settle faster. Otherwise, we’ll provide a clean, climate-controlled crate at our facility in Phoenix.
4. Comfort Items (Optional but Helpful)
These items can help your dog feel more relaxed during their stay:
-
A familiar blanket or towel with your scent
-
One durable toy (no plush toys, please)
-
A small chew for downtime
Avoid bringing anything sentimental or easily damaged — dogs can be playful and curious in a new environment!
5. Medications and Vet Information
If your dog is on any medication, include clearly labeled doses and instructions. Also bring your vet’s contact info and emergency contact number, just in case.
6. Vaccination Records
All dogs must be up to date on Rabies, Bordetella, and Distemper/Parvo (DHPP). Bring a copy of vaccination records so we can verify health and safety for all dogs on-site.
What Not to Bring
To keep your dog safe and our facility organized, please do not pack the following:
-
Large bedding or beds (we provide appropriate bedding)
-
Bowls or feeding dishes (we sanitize and supply our own)
-
Rawhide, bones, or high-risk chews
-
Expensive toys or personal belongings
Our team maintains a clean, secure environment — so your dog’s comfort and safety are always a top priority.
How to Prepare Before Drop-Off
A few simple steps can make the transition even smoother:
-
Give your dog a long walk before check-in to release energy.
-
Avoid feeding a large meal right before drop-off.
-
Pack all items in a clearly labeled bag or bin.
-
Double-check that your dog is wearing ID tags and is microchipped.
We’ll go over your dog’s routine, goals, and behavior history during drop-off to ensure we personalize their experience.
